Hello? Hello? You may think that I've been lost in the crowd. And I have been quiet here but it is only because I've been very busy over at stylesson. I've been posting more than I ever have been before. And you know what, it makes me so happy! I am loving finding and featuring design blogs and sharing them. I am so glad that I decided to do this.

But, I'd like to continue to keep this blog going to. I see this one as my personal voice and sharing happenings going on in my life. My hope is to figure a way to keep all of these balls in the air! I haven't stopped reading my favorite blogs though (yours!), even if I haven't had a chance to reply. You should see all the posts that I've starred that I want to reply to! You matter so much to me.

Even though personally I feel very happy, it saddens me to see all that Japan is suffering with. My thoughts and prayers are with all who are affected by these events.

Living with what you love

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending the "Living with what you love" event in NYC. It was held at the showroom of The New Traditionalists in SOHO. {what gorgeous things they have!}

These two people started it all:

Jonathan Legate and Amy Dragoo who team up every Monday on twitter to host the #DesignTV chat.

They designed all of the beautiful floral arrangements.

Jonathan was at the front door greeting people when I arrived. Anishka Clarke and I arrived at the same time.

There were lots of people and a mixologist who was making yummy drinks.

I think design people are some of the most warm and inviting people that I've met. They have been most welcoming to me and it was a terrific evening.

Thanks to Philip Erdeos, CEO of The New Traditionalists for opening up his beautiful showroom to us and hosting the event.

Halloween Tweet

Are you on twitter? I am. ( @MarcyMichaud ) I jump on in the morning and again in the evening - I never seem to have enough time to chat too much - but I love reading what others are doing. One person who is on most mornings is Leslie Carothers ( @tkpleslie ). {I've met her and she really is a sweetie!} Leslie has a company, The Kaleidoscope Partnership, that helps other companies with social media. She knows her business, but she is also a perfect example of social media in action. She is friendly and personable. She is helpful and informative. So often people are unsure of what social media is, so they do nothing. Instead, if they learned a bit about the different formats (facebook, twitter, etc.) and then just jumped in, it would be better than not trying it. Leslie's example of being yourself, sharing information, and making connections, is a good model.

So as I was getting ready for Halloween this evening, I was thinking about all of the other Halloweens that my son has dressed up for. I pulled out some pictures of the costumes that were created through the years:

He's in high school now so the trick or treating days are fewer, but I love the outfits and creativity that he and I would collaborate on in past years. He had definite opinions, from a very early age, of what each character should be. Some costumes were bought but most were made (my favorite!).

So Leslie, that's my Halloween treat for you. Hope you have fun looking at the pictures.

The sun is shining, you can feel the cool breeze of autumn in the air and people are outside raking leaving, cleaning windows, and decorating for Halloween. The fall leaves are a stunning backdrop for all of the activity.

Pink!

Last evening I had the honor of attending an event hosted by Marcy & Irwin Feld of Irwin Feld Design and Mid Century Antiques for the New England Home Connecticut Fall Networking Event. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month - and pink is the color! Marcy and Irwin had a bench made in a luscious shade of pink. All the proceeds of the sale are going to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure fund.

It was fun to look around at the stunning furniture and accessories that were on display. And the place was packed! Lots of people from the design industry. I met up with bloggers Jessica Ryan, Liz Orgera and Tamara Stephenson (as well as Marcy!), who all had been at The Nate Berkus Show. I was also delighted to meet Kyle Hoepner (Editor-in Chief of NE Home Magazine), Stacy Kunstel (stylist extraordinaire and Homes Editor of NE Home Magazine) and Nancy Moon (PR whiz from Moon & Company) who I follow on twitter but met for the first time in real life. I also got to meet Gloria Collins, Cynthia Mason and Carolyn James McDonough. What a fabulous evening - and for such a great cause!

Next Thursday there is another event, Pink Night, sponsored by the Young Emerging Professionals at the Hotel Sierra in Shelton, CT from 5:30 - 7:30 PM. The evening is in support of the Campaign for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital. There will be food, an auction, music, networking and more - tickets are $30 per person. {RSVP by Tuesday: 203-925-4981}

Cancer has touched the lives of so many people that we love. I'm glad to support these terrific causes to try to put an end to cancer!

And for a final touch of pink, pinkberry is opening their first Connecticut store in Fairfield! I'm looking forward to sampling this frozen yogurt treat - yum! From what I hear I might have to do a lot of sampling; it sounds delicious!

I will miss Cathy

Today is the last day for the comic strip "Cathy". Cathy Guisewite has been creating the comic for 34 years and she has chosen to stop now to spend more time with her family.

When I used to read a daily paper, I would always look forward to "Cathy". The cartoon below is one of my favorites (that I had taped to the inside of a kitchen cabinet door) from February 15, 1994. I think it is just as true (and funny) today as it was then!

One week ago...

... I was headed into NYC. Wow! Last Tuesday was a whirlwind day, followed by a full week, and it has taken me until now to wind down and tell you about it.

Tuesday was Nate Day when a group of bloggers filled the studio for a taping of The Nate Berkus Show. I was delighted to be part of this group. I am learning that bloggers are a very special type of people. They are very giving, friendly and welcoming. What a fantastic group of people to spend the day with!

The day started off with taking the train into the city that morning with Liz from Shorely Chic. We met up with Jess from The Entertaining House to go to brunch with Marcy from Irwin Feld, Catherine from Avery Design Interiors, Maybelline from Frou La La, and Jonathan from Jonathan Legate.

We arrived at the studio, and after waiting in line we were escorted in and were split up into two groups. While we were waiting, we got to chat and talk and visit with the others in the room. What fun! To have people that I've been reading - and feel like I know so well! - sitting and chatting with me was a fabulous experience. There was so much talent in that building!

We were brought into the studio and the show coordinator, Dena Blizzard, took the stage and told us what to expect. She did a great job of guiding us through the segments of the show and she kept us laughing.

Nate was a charming host. He has so much warmth and charisma that it just oozes. I was thrilled that he did a segment with blogger Susan Brinson (House of Brinson) showing photos from her creative home. I had thought that it was going to be a show about bloggers - with examples of their work and interviews, but that was my misperception - no one had said that - but I was a bit disappointed that more bloggers weren't featured. I enjoyed seeing the show anyway and Nate very graciously stayed after the show and answered our questions.

After the show, we went to a party that The Nest held (thanks Camila for arranging that!). It was a terrific way to kick back and spend some more time chatting with everyone.

NYC is such a high-energy city and being with such a dynamic, energetic group was a thrill! {Chanee from {me}longings has put together a list of some of bloggers who went to the show.} To follow along with them on their blogs or on twitter, I think you too will find a talented group of people who are willing to share their thoughts and their friendship. I'm delighted to know this fabulous group!

I've been doing a lot of contemplating. Kind of like when you clean out a closet - you step back, figure out what is working and organize it, and then get rid of the rest. This time I've been thinking about my life. So often things get added here and there and then you end up with a jumble of things going on. Time to organize!

Here's the inspiration: I love reading blogs! I especially like the design blogs and websites. The ideas, the inspiration, the beautiful pictures - and the people. But there are so many great, fantastic blogs to read and I'm having trouble keeping track of it all.

That's what I've been thinking about. And I've decided to organize. I'm putting together a website that will highlight the best of the design bloggers and websites - showcasing a different few each day - as well as creating a directory. But it won't be just rooms, I want it to have heart too. I thought others might like to have a resource too, to get inspiration, find a new blogger, and see a new post.

I'm calling it "style lesson" - and if you smush the "le" together it becomes: stylesson - there it is stylesson.com.

Well, a while ago on Twitter, the moggit girls challenged Nat Berkus (who has just debuted The Nate Berkus Show this past week) to have a show with design bloggers. Julieann (CreateGirl, who I was following) joined in the discussion, as did others, and word came back that Nate agreed! When the date was set for the taping, design bloggers were invited to be in the audience. I submitted my request for a ticket... then held my breath...it took a while {what felt like forever!} and then I got the confirmation that I could go! I was thrilled...and in disbelief...and joyous!

To see Nate and the show in person would be thrilling, but to go and meet design bloggers too was making me deliriously happy! {am I using too many exclamation points?} The taping is on Tuesday and there is a whirlwind of excitement in the design blogging community about it.

So what do you think of my new website idea? Does it sound like something you would use? Any other suggestions to add to it?

I’ve changed…

I’m just back from BlogHer10 and my head is ready to explode! This is the first BlogHer conference that I’ve attended. I feel there is so much that I took in… so much to contemplate…and so much to act upon. I feel like I could burst!

I was so excited and nervous to attend. I wasn’t sure what to expect. Robin’s {Pensieve} advice ‘Be brave, be bold, make the 1st move’ stayed in my head through the weekend. I did just that and the response each time was so positive – people were so welcoming and friendly.

And I think that was one of things that made this weekend so wonderful… these people (mostly women and some men) are committed, active, interested, passionate, caring and smart. Their blog might be big or small but their heart is in it. And they are willing to share.

And the session speakers – wow! – the speakers were so knowledgeable and were willing to tell about their experiences. They came prepared with thoughtful information and tips, as well as a willingness to help share information for everyone to obtain whatever they want for their own blog.

The conference speakers were some of the most powerful presentations. First, international bloggers who truly risked their lives to be able to have a voice for the women and communities that they represented. I felt so humble to listen to their heroic challenges. And then the keynote speakers – strong, confident, women leaders – with the message to get involved – to be active – to create change.

There is so much more… but I’ll have to leave it at that for tonight. It was a conference unlike any other that I’ve attended… and I’ve changed… I’m not sure yet where that will take me but I’m looking forward to the journey!

When I saw that the BlogHer10 Conference was going to be in NYC this year, I had to sign up. I love getting to know the people that are behind the blogs. And this seemed to be the place to do it!

This will be my first BlogHer conference and there are so many interesting sessions to attend. There will also be live blogging if you aren't able to attend.

I've been holding my breath...

Our son was on his first mission trip. A large group of kids (and adults) were going to Appalachia to work on houses and we had the jitters,

... would he remember to use sunscreen

... would he work hard

... would he make friends

... would he have fun

... would he remember to shower

... would he return home with all of his fingers??

It started off with lots and lots of packing... too much stuff! - but what to leave out?... well, while the buses were being loaded, we were pulling things out and condensing everything down to one bag... one very large, heavy bag. A quick goodbye and he was off!

Now you would think that my hubby and I would be kicking up our heels and enjoying this new freedom - but no, we moped about, sulked, took a nap {or two}and then heard from our son. He was on his way, he was having fun! Then we lost contact. He was out of phone range... out of touch... for 7 days... s.e.v.e.n. long days.

We knew that if there was a problem that we'd hear from them. So we tried to relax... and have some fun... We went out to dinner to places that we enjoyed... we planned small trips and reconnected with each other.

But it was hot - really hot and humid (you too?) - and we don't have a/c (hubby doesn't like a/c, so no a/c here) and we kept thinking about what it would be like working on a house in all of that heat.

But f i n a l l y Saturday arrived and hubby was able to speak with our son as he was heading home! And he was thrilled (hubby that is!) and son had had a great time, a fun time. There had been lots of work and lots of friendships made. We waited anxiously for the bus to arrive... and then there he was! And the stories and adventures started to pour out. So much growth in one week.

And then...

I was able to exhale...

Millerton, NY continued...

On Sunday I took to the road to go to the yard sale that Eddie Ross was having. I wrote about it here, but thought I'd show you what I got there. There was china, glassware, fabrics, dishes, furniture, books - lots to look at.

Pictured below are my items: a tan scarf, two floral fabric pieces, a white tablecloth, a transferware dish, a sweet cup and pitcher and a pineapple doorknocker.

I've had a great time placing them around my home - and I smile when I see them and know where they are from.

After bidding goodbye to Eddie and Jaithan, I continued into the town of Millerton to look around.

It is a pretty town with a lovely main street that has scenic views,

...and a vintage feel.

It is very easy to walk up and down the street, looking into the shops.

I stopped at Irving Farm to sit and have some lunch. There food was delicious and the atmosphere was relaxed and cozy.

I was delighted to find Shandell's, that Eddie had talked about. It has "things that make you smile" - don't you love that phrase! I was excited to look inside.

Susan Schneider runs the shop and she greets you {along with her two canine cuties}. She has gorgeous lampshades and lights, as well as handmade night lights, tissue box covers and matchboxes. It is a fun place to explore and Susan is great fun to talk to.

I was delighted to have a beautiful day for a car trip and to see some new places.

Today I was back at home, enjoying the Memorial Day holiday. I appreciate the freedom that we have in this country and am thankful for the men and women who have made it possible. I hope you had as an enjoyable weekend as I had!

Sunday drive… to Millerton, NY

It was a beautiful day here, sunny and warm with just a little breeze. A great day to take a drive! My destination… a yard sale in the country being held by Eddie Ross. I’ve been following Eddie’s work and I admire his ability to create beauty out of just about anything. So when he said he was going to have a yard sale, I was thrilled that I might have a chance to meet him.

So this morning, I hopped in my Beetle and took off for New York. Highways soon turned to roads and the scenery was spectacular. Rolling hills, blue skies, farm land and fields.

Down a country lane, after seeing a couple of yard sale signs, I came upon the house. Jaithan Kochar, Eddie’s partner, greeted me and soon Eddie appeared. They were both so gracious and friendly. It was a gorgeous day to be outside in the country, under the shade of a large tree, having a cup of coffee and talking about the things that I loved.

I love yard sales (and I purchased some fabulous things!) but mostly I love connecting with people who share my same interests. And, to have the opportunity to meet them in person... priceless!

Slow Love

Last evening, a group of us gathered at the Borders bookstore in Fairfield to hear a presentation by Dominique Browning. Dominique has just written the book Slow Love. I have been following her blog Slow Love Life and I was looking forward to seeing her in person and hearing more about her book.

As the minutes counted down, the audience - mostly women - sat and whispered quietly in anticipation. Soon, Dominique was being introduced and to our surprise she rose from a seat within our group.

She introduced us to her book - the result of reinventing herself after losing her job as editor-in-chief of House and Garden magazine combined with her children leaving home and the ending of a long relationship.

I was delighted to hear her read excerpts from the book; it means so much more when you are able to hear the author's words in their own voice. She answered questions with honesty and humor. Dominique has such a warm, compassionate manner that it soon felt like a group of friends sharing thoughts over a cup of coffee.

Too soon it was over but I was delighted to get the chance to meet her and chat one-on-one, and have my book signed.

And this book! It is beautiful, colorful, a handy little size - a gem. I am looking forward to unwrapping the stories that are inside, sharing the journey and savoring the beauty that unfolds.

Dominique is just starting out on her book tour. If she comes to a town near you, I urge you to go meet her and hear her share the journey of Slow Love.

I am the recipient of a Kreative Blogger award from the secret notebooks... wild pages blog. Please go visit; you will find a thoughtful writer with an eye for design and photography who shares her journey through life.

I'm to list 7 interesting things about myself and pass the award along to 7 others.

What you may not know about me:

my first "real" job in high school was as a gift wrapper in a store. It was the year of the large, bulky fleece bathrobe and it seemed as if every man in town was giving that as a gift. Plus matching slippers. Even the largest coat box could barely fit those fluffy robes! My wrapping skills became better as I wrestled those robes into boxes and tried to create neat, pretty gifts.
I should have been an undertaker. When I took the test in high school that would guide me to the best career choices, funeral director was right there as number one. Even though I have an uncle that is an undertaker, I never could picture that as a career path. As I look back I wonder if it would be rewarding to help people cope with their grief and to create a memorable funeral to honor their relative.
The career path that I did choose was fashion. Growing up, I was always tall and as I hit my teens it got harder to find clothes that were long enough. So I started sewing. I loved creating outfits - choosing the pattern & fabric and then creatively making it mine.
The first time that I donated blood I felt faint but instead of recovering right away it took me all day! The staff suggested that even though it was very nice of me to try to donate blood please don't do it again - it was too much trouble for them!
I don't like amusement parks. Merry-go-rounds are okay though.
My maiden name is Gates. There was a time when I was asked if I was related to Bill Gates. Though I have a geeky side, it hasn't been proven that we are related. My dad knew him though through the Boston Computer Society.
My hubby and I have been together for 31 years. We met in college and dated for 9 years before we were engaged (my ring has 9 diamonds to symbolize that). Then it was another 5 years before we were married. He is my best friend.

Bald!

As in St. Baldrick's! Volunteers shave their heads in solidarity with kids fighting cancer and gather donations to go towards childhood cancer research. My son has been thinking about doing this since last year, so when the time came - he was ready!

The stylists from the Total Look Salons did the shaving.

There were lots of folks there - this is a big event! "Shavees", as well as people there to support them, all enjoy the entertainment and party atmosphere.

Then it was his turn...

Look at that smile! That smile stayed with him all weekend.

This was a really fun event for our whole family, but the thought of so many kids who live with bald heads because they are dealing with cancer reminded us why we were there.

Blog Star... Twice Remembered

Kim at Twice Remembered has so much style. I first found her when she was working on her kitchen. She painted her cabinets red, a beautiful cherry red. I was swooning. It seemed like such a bold choice and yet it came across as clean, country and classic. She uses white dishes and vintage accessories and the whole effect is stunning.

Oh my gosh, look at that decorating! It looks yummy, so delicious. Don't try to eat them though. Kim specializes in 'faux sweet treats'. They will look that good for a long time. What attention to detail! She is so talented.

Kim and her husband continue to work on their house: setting up a studio, laying down new floors and tackling other big projects.

Then Kim wrote a piece that tugged at my heart. It was so sweet and such a beautiful piece that I had to write to her to see about posting it here. She agreed and this is it:

A new magazine!

I adore magazines. Love magazines. Am addicted to magazines. I've been so sorry to see some of my favorite magazines disappear in recent months. Magazines are my relaxation, my escape - the thick, glossy pages transport me to different places, give me inspiration and warm my heart. And now, there is a new one - Flea Market Style.

This is a magazine that is co-edited by Matthew Mead and Ki Nassauer - both super talented. And a couple of my favorite bloggers, Linda McDonald of Restyled Home and Heather Bullard, are involved too. The first issue is due out now - I hope you find it in your town and pick up a copy.

Starting to bloom...

There is a new gift shop in town that has vintage items as well as wonderful new goodies. I was browsing there for the first time a few weeks ago and saw the most perfect little antique-looking urn. I'm not sure if it was old but it had been planted with Narcissus bulbs and covered with moss. It would be just the right size to fit on my kitchen window ledge. I thought about how lovely it would be to watch it grow and have something to help bridge that time between the holiday decorations and the flowers of spring. But... it was $35. Not a fortune, but more than I should be spending during the weeks before Christmas. So I went home and thought about it... and thought about it. A while had passed and I decided that I needed a "treat" and that that urn would be just the thing. So on a Saturday morning, with my hubby in tow, I returned to the shop. I was delighted to show him all the goodies in the shop, including this urn. I suggested that I was going to purchase it and he asked if I was going to get a couple. I asked him if he had seen the price. He said no - so I showed him. He questioned whether I needed it. - and that was it - the world twisted and I saw red. I didn't want to justify why I needed it. It was a simple question from him - and a worthy one - but my fun, little "treat" was no longer fun. We left the store.

He was right. And I knew it. But I'm stubborn and I still wanted it. But I didn't want that one anymore.

So I went to the grocery store and bought an Amaryllis bulb (inexpensive and less smelly than Narcissus - which I thought was a good choice for the kitchen) and then rummaged around in the garage for a flower pot and planted that bulb. I also dug up a bit of green moss from a corner of the backyard and covered around the bulb and proudly placed it on my windowsill.

And I've been watching it grow... daily gaining more length and leaves... til now when it is just getting ready to bloom.

My blog has reached its one year "blogiversary". What a wonderful year it has been! I have loved meeting so many caring, talented people. I had no idea that I would feel so connected to all of you. Thank you for being there. For taking the time to read my blog and sending an inspirational comment. I love them all.

It's funny, I adore all of the design and craft blogs - so I thought that's what my blog would be, and perhaps it will - but I find that I tend to write from the heart. I'm still finding my "voice" and I'm so thankful that you've put up with all of the squeaks and squawks as I've practiced using it.

I hope you'll take a moment to leave a comment, say hi, tell a little about yourself (and your blog if you have one) and get to know the other delightful people that are also readers. I can't tell you how impressed I am by all of you.

It's okay...

if the cards don't get out this week... mail them in January, or divide them up and call or write to a group of people during each month of this coming year... they're always glad to hear from you.
if the presents aren't beautifully wrapped... gather up the opening of the bag that they came in and put a big bow on it... it is a great, green alternative!
if all the presents didn't get purchased... offer the gift of your time or services... volunteer to spend some time with the person, do an errand, make a favorite dinner, plant a garden - write a note on a card with your gift.
if your home isn't decorated...dim the lights, light some candles, cook something on the stove, and turn on some carols... the mood will be warm and festive.

This is a season for reaching out to others and speading good cheer. Try to keep it simple and not to stress over the details. Sit back, watch the magic around you, and smile. It is truly a beautiful season.

Ahh....

I'm back from a Thanksgiving vacation...at home! Very relaxing...and got a lot done.

It started on Thanksgiving with my mom, sister and her kids arriving for Thanksgiving dinner. There was lots of food.

Hubby and son always make the mince pie. When it came time to make the slits, do you think they did "M" for mince? Or a pattern? Oh yes, a pattern! Do you see the basketball court? Yes, that was the design of choice for the mince pie!

I love setting the table. I had an old family quilt that I used down the center of the table and an old wooden bowl that I put gourds and leaves in for the centerpiece.

This is our second Thanksgiving without my mother-in-law. She had collected lots of dishes but my favorites are the Thanksgiving ones ['His Majesty' from Johnson Brothers]. We miss her but using her china is a nice remembrance of her and is a way to "bring her to the table" with us.

It was wonderful to have time with my family, to have time to rest, and time to work hard at home. I am so grateful for all that I have. And, you are part of that. Thank you so much for spending time with me here!

Fall color

The past two weeks have produced some of the most spectacular colors of the fall. Now, most of the leaves are on the ground. As I walk, I enjoy witnessing the changes that are taking place and capturing their fleeting beauty.

I am looking forward to this year's Rooms with a View that is taking place on November 6, 7 and 8th in Southport, CT. This is the 15th year, but it will be my first year attending - and I'm so excited!

There will be room vignettes by these top designers: Alexa Hampton, Capellini Design Associates, Cobble Court Interiors, Eleish Van Breems, Eddie Ross, Malcolm James Kutner, Margaret Bondy Interiors, Mimi Designs, Parker & Company, Shawn Callaghan Diaz Designs, Susan Oster Design and The Wakefield Collection. Wow! And a marketplace...and a preview party, luncheon & fashion show, and a holiday decorating seminar.

"These Are a Few of My Favorite Things" is the theme of the show. Who wants to meet me there?

Dr. Miller

Growing up, we lived across the street from Dr. Miller. I remember, as a young girl, looking out of our front windows and watching Dr. Miller mow his lawn. Back and forth he would go, making nice straight rows in the lawn. He always wore an old golf cap. You know the kind - round and flat with a little brim.

One morning, while watching Dr. Miller, my mother called us for breakfast. She served us a favorite: a piece of bread that had a hole cut out of it, then grilled with an egg in the center hole, and the round hole piece placed on top. For a little kid, it reminded me of Dr. Miller. The bread representing the lawn, the egg being him, and then the round piece on top being his hat. Dr. Miller!

But what I loved about this moment is that it didn't stop there. Where as a parent you smile at your child's silliness and go on with your day, my mom instead honored what I was saying by accepting it and calling indeed calling this breakfast a "Dr. Miller". And continued to call it that. To this day, that is what it is still called in our family. I think that is so sweet and so special.

I've never known this breakfast dish by any other name. Though when we were in Maine this summer, we had breakfast at a restaurant where they had something called a "Toad in the Hole" which I believe is the same thing.

We have just one word left from our son's misprouncation of words, or made up words, as he was growing up. It is "crumper" which means the laundry hamper. Not sure how it ever came to be... it just is.

I smile as I make Dr. Millers today...

What we did on our summer vacation... Stockbridge, MA

We love to visit Stockbridge. It is a picturesque New England town. Norman Rockwell painted here and it still maintains that quaintness.

Don't you love this country store? They have terrific things inside. The floor boards creak as you walk through... it is wonderful!

Here is the Red Lion Inn. It is historic and that porch is a big attraction...

I loved these black-eyed susans outside of a gift shop.

Here is one of the cottages that is part of the inn.

As I walked through town, I admired the architecture and especially the doorways.

Isn't this twig frame wonderful?

And spectacular flowers...

Here is another inn in town.

I loved the colors on this house. There is a big bunch of hydrangeas by the front door.

We had the best meal at Once Upon a Table. It is located next door to the Red Lion Inn and is run by a friend from my hometown. The food is always outstanding and I love the intimate atmosphere. Be sure to stop in if you visit...

We also visited the Norman Rockwell Museum. We didn't get a chance to go to Edith Wharton's house "The Mount", but Linda Merrill of ::Surroundings:: did an extensive write up on it here, here, here, here, here, and here - and here. Whew! She did such a great job of sharing all the details, that I feel like I was there!

We'll return again to Stockbridge - oh, I almost forgot - there are lots of antique stores in the area. Lots of fun places to explore!

Connection to God and friends

I am honored to work each day with Paul McManus. He has a spirit that is full of joy, a ready smile and he's the most wonderful, creative thinker. Do you know Paul? He and his wife, Tracey, are the authors of the book The 7 Great Prayers. It wasn't until I read this book that I learned about praying.

For a long time I thought that praying was reciting the prayers that I had grown up with. Sure, every once in a while I would put in a plea to God for something, but what I was missing was the conversation. The conversation with God. Talking to Him and listening to Him. Through this book I have learned about that conversation and it has made it so much easier for me. Seven simple prayers that help me to connect with God.

There is a 7 Great Prayers bracelet that has 7 colorful beads to remind you of each of the prayers. I've been wearing mine for more than a year now.

One year ago today, I found myself at the hospital emergency room because a family member was very ill. It was a Saturday morning and I hadn't yet put on my bracelet. And I missed it... In its simplicity it reminded me to focus on all the good gifts from God and helped me to get grounded to handle what was ahead.

After that morning, I've never forgotten my bracelet. It continues to be a daily reminder to me to thank God and to see Him and his beauty all around me.

Summer days

I love summer! Warm days, lots of sunshine... and weeds. Boy, am I good at growing weeds! I have gardens full of each type of weed and they are all doing well. Thriving, in fact. Lots of rain, and pure neglect on my part, has resulted in a bountiful supply. And I'm just letting them go. I have other things that I'm doing. I'm active, busy and happy. The weeds will have to wait.

There are friends, and vacation, family and lobster dinners, the beach and sitting on the porch. The weeds will have to wait... because I love summer!

I should have known...

...how much I would care.

When I started blogging I thought it might be all about family, houses, decorating and fun stuff. And it is! What I didn't expect is to become so involved in the lives of the fabulous people behind each of those posts. As you share your personal vision of the world going by, there are emotions and events that begin to shape my image of you. You become more than an unseen blog author, you are now very real to me. And as much as I care about your latest decorating treasure, I also care about the person. Little did I expect that Jo's husband's medical emergency, or the landlord situation that caused The Nester to move, or Melissa's emergency surgery, or Rachel Anne's miscarriage or Lulu bravely answering the call of her dream, or Catherine celebrating her birthday or Mar's incredible love for his dog or Rosemary sharing pictures of her beautiful mother, - and there are so many others - would all become things that I think about ... and care about.

I feel that I know you, and the threads that run through the fabric of this life that we share become intertwined. And I adore that because it gives such a greater dimension to the words that you write and the pictures that you share.

I really should have known though. And it is because of another group of exceptional woman that I even came to know the world of blogging. There is a group of "summermoms" who all had babies during the summer of 1995. From infancy on up now to the teen years, we have shared stories and laughter and opinions. And we have been true to each other - and it is so good! And I care...

So why would blogging be any different? I really should have known that I would care this much.

I've been thinking about doing a regular post each week to write about and celebrate the people that I have found in the blogging world - and there are a lot of you. I read a lot of blogs and am in awe of the work that you do and your talent. And I'd like to share that with others. I hope that you won't mind if I shine the spotlight on you sometime so that others may see what an incredible person you are.

I'll continue to go on reading, and sharing my own story, but know that you are touching the lives of others...

...and that I care.

Getting to know you...

Isn't it wonderful when someone knows you so well that they pick out gifts that you just adore? My sister has me pegged. She gave me this bowl, that has a Nantucket basket feel to it, for my birthday - and I just love it! It's planted with flowers right now but I can see it filled with shells, or with pinecones in the fall or antique Christmas ornaments for the holidays.

Our church is sponsoring a Field of Flags to honor the men and women who have died in Iraq and Afganistan. There are over 5000 flags to represent each of these courageous people and as a remembrance for the family and friends who loved them.

My guys placed so many flags! They were a great team and worked quickly together.

I hope that you'll take time to remember the freedoms that we have in this country and remember these families today.

One year ago today you were born. We didn't know you yet, but we knew we wanted a Westie and that it would be you or one of your siblings.

This is your baby picture. You were just a few weeks old but what a cutie!

And then we received this photo - who couldn't love this ball of fuzz?

We heard that you were the first one of your siblings to figure out how to "escape". We now know how clever and determined you are!

We went to pick you up on a hot day in July. It was a very long car ride and you found a comfortable lap to cuddle up on and take a nap.

Look at how small you were that first day!

Still tiny, but boy those ears are growing!

This must be comparable to the "awkward years" when parts are growing so fast and others haven't caught up. Those ears took over your whole face!

But then you continued to grow and got all fuzzy. And grew into our hearts, too. We had no idea that a dog could be such an important member of the family.

What a fuzzy boy you were becoming!

And there were haircuts that left you looking a little bare...

And since you were born in the spring, you had never seen snow. This was your first venture out into the cold, white stuff - you thought it was terrific!

We dressed you up for the annual Christmas card. You were very accomodating...

You became very comfortable in your surroundings and made our home - your home.

You are curious and on alert. Always ready to meet a new friend.

We adore you puppy! You bring us such joy and happiness. May we have many years together. Happy Birthday, Kinn!

Spring has arrived!

Spring poked her head out on Sunday and it was delightful - warm and sunny... it felt great!

Look at this beautiful home... I love how the blue flowers create a carpet of blue in front of the house.

Today it doesn't feel like Spring in Connecticut, but things are just waiting for those first warm days to spring into bloom.

Spring... where are you?

I should have known when it snowed here on the first day of spring, that it might still not feel like spring just yet. No flowers, no blossoms, no warm weather... just the hope that it is all to come. Here are the forsythia branches from the backyard that I've brought in to "force" spring into happening.

And I've been thinking spring! Though I love my black handbag, I swooned over the color of a new lighter-looking bag (handbag, purse, pocketbook... what do you call it?). I tend to make safe choices and this seemed so reckless, but what fun! Sometimes I need more of that...

And when I got the bag home and began thinking about the yummy green color, I remember adoring a green handbag that a friend had had back in the 3rd grade. She was a popular girl, and in my eyes did all the right things and she had a green bag that I thought was fantastic. I tried to make something like it - but it was never right. I'm delighted to now have a green bag - and I still adore you, Kathy!

So until spring arrives outside, I'm trying to make it a little lighter and brighter inside. Wishing you many warm and sunny days ahead!

Balance

As days go by, I try to make sure there is balance. Some days this is easier than others. And then there are days, or even a week, that go by where things seem very out-of-balance - and not always in a bad way. This week has been like that. I had a movie date with my hubby, dinner with some college friends and another dinner with wonderful friends from church. Lots of fun things but the maintenance of the house has suffered. Time for the balance to swing the other way...

We have two full bathrooms in our cottage. This is the upstairs one that is connected to the master bedroom, but it is also shared by the second bedroom upstairs. It is small and hasn't been changed much (or not at all!) since we moved in over 10 years ago. Time for a change...

I feel like I've walked into a big room with lots of people and everyone is having a conversation. The people are talented and witty - and interesting. And there I stand, listening... I'm enjoying the conversation that is whirling around me. But I am silent. That's how I feel so far in starting this blog.

Perfection is something that is a hard thing to maintain. I love it when everything is in the right place and all the i's are dotted and t's crossed. But this is life. There is rarely perfection.

And so it is with my writing. I would like everything that I say here to be witty and interesting, - and perfect - but instead there has been silence. Well - that is no good!

So I'm going to jump in - with my imperfection - and just go!
